Control on a diet is key for tighter control on type 2 diabetes. Here are some of the guidelines -
- Carbohydrates - They are the biggest culprits for sugars in diabetics but they are also essential. Remember to choose the good carbs like whole grains, legumes, brown rice etc. Just skip potatoes, corn, white bread... Look at the glycemic index for an idea on the quality of a carb.
- Proteins - Essential stuff to help with the control of sugras. Make sure you take atleast some protein with each meal. Fish and poultry are good. Red meat works, but you want to moderate the intake for other health reasons. Tofu is a great alternative for vegetarians as well as non vegetarians, but again do not overdo it. Other begetable sources are pulses and legumes, like beans, but watch out for the carbs that come with these.
- Time Lapse Between Meals - You have to space out your meals. Give you body atleast 2 hours between meals. I prefer three to four, but two at a minimum. Got to keep track of your eating in your head.
- Balance Of Food - Balance your diet. Too much of any one thing is never good.
- Serving Size - Watch out for the serving sizes. Know how much to eat, especially with the carbs. A slice of bread can be one to three servings based on the company. Always know how much you are consuming.
